The Method

Spaced repetition: learn less, remember more

Discover why reviewing a word at the right moment is far more effective than cramming.

The problem with traditional memorisation

Most vocabulary learning approaches rely on massed practice: re-reading lists, copying words, drilling until exhaustion. This produces short-term retention — but words evaporate within days. Cognitive science research shows that how we review matters far more than how long we spend.

The forgetting curve and the spacing effect

In 1885, Hermann Ebbinghaus showed that memory decays along a predictable curve — the famous forgetting curve. But he also discovered something remarkable: reviewing a memory just before it fades strengthens it exponentially. This is the spacing effect. Vocabingo exploits exactly this principle.

The SM-2 algorithm: spaced repetition in practice

Vocabingo uses the SM-2 algorithm, developed by Piotr Woźniak in the 1980s and used by millions of learners worldwide. For each word, the algorithm calculates the optimal review interval based on your past performance. Answer correctly and the interval grows. Answer incorrectly and the word comes back sooner.

The 5 stages of mastery

In Vocabingo, every word moves through 5 stages: learned today → review tomorrow → review in 7 days → review in 14 days → review in 30 days → mastered. Each mistake resets the word. Each success brings you closer to permanent retention.

10 words a day, a habit for life

Consistency beats intensity. Ten minutes a day, every day, far outperforms a two-hour session once a week. Vocabingo is designed to fit into your daily routine — not replace it.

Frequently asked questions about the method

How long does it take to master a word?

Expect 4 to 6 weeks depending on your performance. A word goes through the full cycle: Day+1 → Day+7 → Day+14 → Day+30, then it's considered mastered.

What happens if I miss a review?

Vocabingo calculates missed days and offers a gradual catch-up. You can also choose to forgive the catch-up debt if you've been away too long.

Does spaced repetition work for beginners?

Absolutely. It's actually most effective at the start: building a solid foundation from day one prevents bad habits and false memories.

Does Vocabingo really use the SM-2 algorithm?

Yes. Vocabingo's implementation closely follows the SM-2 interval calculation, adapted to use incremental intervals from the actual review date.
