The first 500 words. Master these and you can handle basic conversations in any situation.
A1 is the entry point of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). At this level you can introduce yourself, ask and answer simple questions about personal details, and interact in a basic way - provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly. The vocabulary at A1 is dominated by the most frequent words in the language: core verbs, pronouns, prepositions, common nouns, and everyday adjectives. These 500 words alone give you roughly 60–65% coverage of everyday spoken language.
What you can do at A1
- ✦Introduce yourself and ask for basic personal information
- ✦Describe where you live and the people you know
- ✦Ask for things in simple transactions (shops, cafés)
- ✦Understand very simple written notices and messages
- ✦Ask and tell the time, days, and dates
How many words does A1 require?
Research by Paul Nation and other corpus linguists suggests that knowing the 500 most frequent words in a language gives approximately 60–65% text coverage in spoken contexts. This sounds modest, but at A1 the goal is not fluency - it is the ability to function in predictable, everyday situations. The 500 most common words also include all the grammatical machinery (pronouns, prepositions, auxiliaries) needed to form sentences. A1 vocabulary is the scaffolding everything else is built on.
