A2 vocabulary - Elementary
Words 501–1000. Conversations about daily life, people around you, and the world you live in.
A2 represents the elementary stage - learners can communicate in simple, direct exchanges on familiar topics. The second 500 most frequent words shift from pure grammatical machinery toward concrete nouns and verbs with real-world referents: family, work, time, travel, and emotions. At A2, learners can hold basic conversations about their daily life, understand simple texts about familiar topics, and write short personal messages. Research shows that learners who reach the 1,000-word milestone typically experience a noticeable "unlock" - everyday conversation starts to feel less like decoding and more like communication.

The 1,000-word milestone
Vocabulary acquisition research identifies 1,000 words as a significant threshold. At this point learners can understand approximately 75% of spoken language in everyday contexts, and the combination of A1 + A2 vocabulary covers most of the grammar words plus a solid core of content vocabulary. Many learners describe the jump from A1 to A2 as the moment when language starts to "click" - partial understanding gives way to genuine, if limited, communication.
