C1 vocabulary - Advanced
Words 2001–3000. Precise, nuanced, academic - the vocabulary of near-native proficiency.
C1 is the advanced level - learners can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. They can express themselves fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. The vocabulary at C1 extends well beyond frequency-list words into the academic, intellectual, and precise register: ambiguous, coherent, inevitable, pragmatic, scrutinise. These are words that distinguish polished native-speaker writing from competent learner writing - and mastering them is what pushes communicative ability from "good" to "excellent".

How many words does C1 require?
Research by Nation and others suggests that 95% spoken language comprehension - the threshold for comfortable native-speaker interaction - requires knowledge of approximately 3,000 word families. Written text comprehension at 98% (the level needed for reading novels without a dictionary) requires 8,000–9,000 word families. C1 learners typically have around 3,000–5,000 active words, with a much larger receptive vocabulary. The gap between B2 and C1 is therefore less about quantity than quality: at C1 it is not just knowing more words, but knowing finer distinctions, collocations, register, and connotation.
