B2 is the upper intermediate level - learners can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of specialisation. They can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain. The vocabulary at B2 is characterised by academic and analytical language: develop, analyse, consequence, demonstrate, evaluate. These are words that appear heavily in written texts, news media, and professional discourse, making B2 vocabulary essential for anyone who needs to read or write at a professional or academic level.

2,000 words and the written language gap
At 2,000 words, learners are approaching the threshold where spoken language comprehension is relatively high (around 85–90%), but a significant gap opens up with written text. Academic and journalistic writing draws heavily from a vocabulary band above the 2,000-word line. This is why B2-level learners often feel more comfortable in conversation than in reading - and why moving beyond 2,000 words into C1 territory requires a deliberate shift toward engaging with written native content.
